Former Nigerian defender, Waidi Akanni, believes that the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) players possess the necessary skills and abilities to overcome Sao Tome in the final group game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Super Eagles have already secured their place in the AFCON tournament next year after an exhilarating 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone during the fifth match-day in Monrovia, Liberia.
The upcoming encounter against Sao Tome provides an ideal platform for the Super Eagles to display the depth of talent within Nigeria’s footballing ranks. Additionally, it will provide valuable insights to the coaching staff as they prepare to assemble a formidable squad capable of achieving success on the continental stage in the AFCON tournament.
During an interview with Sporty9ja.com, Akanni emphasized that the Sao Tome game presents an opportunity for coach Peseiro to showcase the quality of NPL players who are capable of competing against strong opponents.
“I believe this is a game where Peseiro and his technical crew should focus on selecting a strong team comprised mainly of home-based Eagles to face Sao Tome in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
“Considering that Nigeria has already qualified for the tournament, there is no need to unleash all our foreign-based players. I am confident that the NPL players can secure victory if they are given the necessary motivation and support,” Akanni stated.
