73-year-old Portuguese club beats Racing Santander to Nigeria’s ex-Arsenal star – report

Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is set to join GD Chaves, a top-division Portuguese club, on a two-year contract. Nwakali’s move comes after his spell with Spanish side Ponferradina, where he made commendable contributions despite the club’s relegation.

During his time at Ponferradina, Nwakali, who is 25 years old, made 36 appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists. Despite his impressive performances, the club couldn’t avoid relegation, and they announced that he would be allowed to leave for a nominal fee.

Several Spanish teams, including Racing Santander, expressed interest in Nwakali’s services, but he ultimately chose to move to Portugal. This transfer marks the end of his three-year stint in Spain, which had its difficulties, including an abrupt halt to his time at top-division side Huesca due to his late return from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

GD Chaves, founded 73 years ago, finished last season’s campaign in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with a respectable 7th-place finish. The acquisition of Nwakali, a former U17 World Cup golden ball winner, is expected to strengthen the team for the upcoming season.

According to Portuguese transfer market expert Pedro Sepulveda, an official announcement regarding Nwakali’s signing is expected in the next few days after he completes a routine medical examination. All parties involved have already agreed to the terms of the transfer.

This will be Nwakali’s second spell in Portugal, as he previously spent time on loan at Porto B from Arsenal. During his time at Porto B, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, making 16 appearances mostly as a substitute.

Nwakali will be hoping for a more prosperous period in Portugal as he joins GD Chaves. With his talent and experience, he will aim to make a significant impact and contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
