Super Eagles Striker Victor Osimhen Nominated for Best African International at Ghana Football Awards
Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has been shortlisted for the prestigious Ghana Football Awards, according to reports from Soccernet.ng. The Napoli star is one of four nominees in the Best African International category, alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, and Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Osimhen’s inclusion is no surprise, given his remarkable achievements throughout the season. In the 2022/23 Serie A campaign, he spearheaded Napoli’s triumphant march to glory, clinching their first league title since 1990. With an awe-inspiring tally of 26 goals in Italy’s top flight, the Super Eagles’ prodigy etched his name into the annals of history as the first African player ever to win the Serie A top scorer award. That feat also earned him the well-deserved accolade of Serie A’s Best Striker for the season.
Meanwhile, Algeria’s captain Riyad Mahrez is a favorite for the award after finding himself on the precipice of an extraordinary treble with Manchester City. With an impressive record of 15 goals and 13 assists in a staggering 47 appearances across various competitions, Mahrez has proven to be a vital cog in City’s relentless pursuit of glory.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah also made the elite shortlist, having showcased his unwavering brilliance on the grand stage. The Egyptian maestro’s mesmerized the Anfield faithful with 30 goals and 16 assists in 51 games.
The Ghana Football Awards, established in 2018, celebrates the achievements of Ghanaian and African footballers, coaches, and administrators who have excelled in their respective fields. The winners will be announced at a gala event on July 3, 2022.
