Chelsea have made a promising addition to their squad with the signing of young Portuguese forward Diego Moreira from Benfica. The Blues announced the transfer on their official website, with the fee remaining undisclosed.
Moreira, whose father Almami was a Guinea-Bissau international, joined Benfica in 2020 after a spell with Standard Liege. The 18-year-old had a significant impact on the club’s success in the 2022 UEFA Youth League, providing two assists in the final as they defeated Salzburg 6-0.
Having already made his senior debut, Moreira played regularly for Benfica B last season. He made his first appearance for the senior team in May 2022 against Pacos de Ferreira. Currently, he is representing his country at the European Under-21 Championship and has featured in matches against the Netherlands and Belgium.
Moreira’s football journey has seen him play for multiple national teams. He is a dual citizen of Belgium and Portugal and is eligible to represent both Guinea-Bissau and Germany. Initially, he played for Belgium’s under-15 team and was a key player in their 3-1 victory over England in February 2019 at St George’s Park. However, in 2019, he made the decision to switch his allegiance to Portugal and has since become a regular in their under-16 and under-18 squads, despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The acquisition of Moreira showcases Chelsea’s commitment to nurturing young talent and strengthening their squad for the future. Fans can look forward to seeing the young winger in action and witnessing his potential unfold at Stamford Bridge.
Welcome to Chelsea, Diego!
