Former Golden Eaglets star and FC Copenhagen of Denmark forward, Akinkunmi Amoo, has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault. The sentence was handed down by a Danish court on Friday, June 23, 2023. Amoo, who was found guilty of charges including rape, attempted rape, and violations of two other women, will appeal the court decision.
The 21-year-old footballer was first charged with criminal offenses in April 2022, and again in July and August of the same year. He was subsequently arrested on September 10, 2022, and released on bail on October 7.
Amoo was part of the Golden Eaglets squad that finished fourth at the 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. He also featured at the U-17 World Cup, where the Eaglets were eliminated in the round of 16.
The sentencing of Amoo is a sad reminder of the importance of respecting women and the consequences of sexual assault. It also highlights the need for athletes to behave responsibly and uphold the values of fair play and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
As sports enthusiasts, we have a responsibility to promote positive values and behaviors among athletes. We must condemn all forms of sexual assault and violence against women and support efforts to create a safer and more respectful world for all. Let us all work together to create a sporting community that is free from discrimination, harassment, and abuse.
