The Npfl 2023/24 season is set to begin on August 26, promising an exciting competition ahead. The Chairman of the Nigeria Professional Football League, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, announced that the winner of this season will receive a handsome reward of N150 million.
Elegbeleye emphasized that the kick-off date is non-negotiable and that all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a smooth start to the season. The aim is to align with the European season and conclude the campaign on time, taking into consideration other football programs of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Last season, the league winners received N100 million as prize money. However, in a bid to incentivize the clubs, this season’s prize money has been increased to N150 million. Additionally, a portion of the prize money will be allocated for facility improvements and players’ welfare. The objective is to encourage clubs to enhance their stadiums and enhance the remuneration of their players, ultimately leading to improved performance on the pitch.
It is worth noting that stadia that have been deemed unfit to host Npfl matches will remain banned until they pass inspection. Newly promoted clubs will also face scrutiny to ensure their stadiums meet the required standards. Any venue that fails to meet these standards will not be permitted to host any league games.
Refereeing is another crucial aspect of the league, and the Npfl Chairman is hopeful that the referees who performed well last season will raise their game even further this season. He credits the success of the previous campaign to the prompt payment of indemnities and allowances to referees and other match officials. In the same vein, he pledges to continue ensuring that match officials receive their dues two days before each game. Any referee found to be in violation of their duties will face disciplinary actions.
The anticipation for the Npfl 2023/24 season is building, and fans across the country are eagerly awaiting the kick-off on August 26. With increased prize money, improved facilities, and better player welfare, this season promises to be a thrilling and competitive affair. Stay tuned for more updates on the exciting action that awaits us in the Nigeria Professional Football League.
