Finidi George Urges Ex-Super Eagles Players to Impact Nigerian Professional Football League
Finidi George, head coach of the Nigeria Professional Football League team Enyimba F.C, has urged his former Super Eagles teammates who are now in a coaching role to return home and impact the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). According to Finidi, ex-Super Eagles players who are waiting for the opportunity to coach in Europe should not wait too long and should focus on impacting the NPFL.
Speaking on Sports Salsa (Kennis 104.1FM), Finidi advised those still looking for coaching opportunities in Europe to come back home and make an impact in the Nigerian league. He said, “Most of these ex-players are in Europe. And you cannot be waiting for that opportunity to come [to coach in Europe] once you see that you do not have that opportunity over there. Come back home, and make an impact.”
Finidi, who is currently in his second season with Enyimba, has led the team to first place in the NPFL Championship playoff group with 5 points. His team secured a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance in their NPFL Super 6 tournament.
The former Ajax star also mentioned John Utaka, who is currently an assistant coach for Montpelier’s U-19 team, as an example of an ex-Super Eagles player making a promising start in his coaching career. Finidi hopes more players will follow in his footsteps and impact the Nigerian league.
The NPFL has been making strides in recent years, with increased sponsorship and improved infrastructure. The league has also produced some talented players who have gone on to play for top European clubs. With the support of former Super Eagles players, the league could continue to grow and produce more talented players and coaches.
In conclusion, Finidi George’s call for ex-Super Eagles players to return home and impact the NPFL is a timely reminder of the importance of investing in the development of football at the grassroots level. The Nigerian league has the potential to become one of the best in Africa, and with the support of former players, it could achieve great things in the future.
