AFCONQ: Guinea-Bissau overtake Super Eagles after Sao Tome win

Guinea-Bissau Secures Top Spot in Group A at 2023 AFCON Qualifiers

Guinea-Bissau has reclaimed the top spot in Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after securing a 1-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in their fifth match. With this win, the Djurtus now have 10 points from five matches, overtaking Nigeria by a single point.

It was a closely contested game, with the first half ending in a goalless draw. However, the Belgian-based Zinho Gano broke the deadlock just 10 minutes into the second half, sealing the deal for Guinea-Bissau and ensuring their comprehensive double over Sao Tome and Principe, who are currently at the bottom of the group.

Guinea-Bissau’s head coach, Baciro Cande, has led the team to an advantageous position to secure their fourth appearance at the AFCON. However, the Super Eagles can still reclaim the lead in the group if they defeat Sierra Leone in their upcoming match on Sunday, which will be held in Liberia.

As of now, Nigeria holds the second spot with nine points from four games, while Sierra Leone is in third place with five points from four matches. If Sierra Leone fails to beat Nigeria, both the Super Eagles and Guinea-Bissau will secure their qualification for the Ivory Coast 2023 even before playing their final group-stage matches.
