Napoli fans were left shocked when Luciano Spalletti announced his departure from the club after leading them to their first Scudetto in 33 years. However, the Naples giants are already making moves to sign a replacement, with Christophe Galtier in pole position to become their new coach.
According to reports, Galtier is the front-runner to take over at Napoli, which could see him reunited with Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen. The French tactician was Osimhen’s coach during the 2019/20 season at Lille, where the Nigerian striker scored 13 goals and finished fifth on Ligue 1’s highest goalscorers’ charts.
Napoli signed Osimhen for a reported fee of €80 million last summer, and the 24-year-old had a great debut season with the club. He scored 26 goals in all competitions, including 10 in Serie A, and became the first African player to win the Capocannoniere award.
Galtier, on the other hand, had an average season at PSG last term, helping the club retain their league title but failing to impress in the French Cup and the Champions League. The Frenchman was sacked after just one season in charge.
Despite his disappointing spell at PSG, Galtier is highly regarded in France for his work at Lille, where he led the club to a surprise Ligue 1 title in 2021. He is known for his tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of his players, which could make him a good fit for Napoli.
Napoli fans will be hoping that Galtier can replicate the success he had at Lille and guide the club to more silverware in the coming seasons. With Osimhen leading the line, the Naples giants have the potential to be a force to be reckoned with in Italy and Europe.
