Victor Osimhen Fires Super Eagles to Victory in AFCON Qualifiers

In a thrilling encounter at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia, Victor Osimhen scored twice to power the Super Eagles to a 3-2 win over Sierra Leone in the AFCON Qualifiers. With this win, Nigeria has sealed its place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare.

Osimhen, who opened the scoring in the 19th minute, doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 32nd minute with a brilliant finish. The Napoli striker now leads the AFCON qualification goals chart with seven strikes, surpassing Sadio Mane of Senegal, who has scored five goals.

However, Sierra Leone staged a second-half comeback, with Mustapha Bundu halving the deficit for the Leone Stars just before halftime. In the second half, Sierra Leone pinned Nigeria back in their own half, but the Super Eagles held on to claim a draw.

Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to net the winning goal for Nigeria, securing their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Head coach Jose Peseiro handed goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye his Super Eagles debut, and the Israeli-based shotstopper made a couple of saves late on to deny the Leone stars a winner.

With Osimhen in top form, Nigeria will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming AFCON tournament. The Super Eagles have won the Africa Cup of Nations three times, and they will be looking to add to their tally in 2023.
