AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: “We can beat anybody” – Nottingham’s Awoniyi fires warning at Sierra Leone

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is confident that Nigeria will emerge victorious against Sierra Leone when both teams meet on the 18th of June. Awoniyi’s return to the Super Eagles squad after a successful campaign at Nottingham Forest has given the team a boost ahead of the crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Despite suffering a niggling injury midway through the season, Awoniyi finished the campaign strongly, scoring five important goals in his final three games to help his team avoid relegation. This impressive performance earned him a call-up to the national team ahead of the crucial qualifier against Sierra Leone.

Speaking exclusively to Soccernet, Awoniyi expressed his confidence in the Super Eagles, stating that if the players can be at their best, they can defeat anybody. He stressed the importance of the game against Sierra Leone, saying that it is a game that is very important to the country because they only have one opportunity to play it.

According to Awoniyi, Nigerians should expect nothing other than victory because the team has a calibre of players who have performed excellently for their club sides. He urged his teammates to bring the same spirit that they have from their club sides to the national team, adding that if they can do that, no nation can beat the Super Eagles.

A victory in the game against Sierra Leone would seal Nigeria’s place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Cote D’Ivoire next year. The Super Eagles have a rich history in the competition, having won it three times and finishing as runners-up four times. With Awoniyi’s confidence and the team’s determination, they have a great chance of adding to their trophy cabinet.
