Bendel Insurance’s remarkable 21-game unbeaten run came to an end on Friday after losing 2-1 to league champions Rivers United in match-day four of the NPL Super Six playoffs. Despite the loss, Divine Nwachukwu, a Super Eagles invitee for the 2023 AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone, managed to score a goal in stoppage time for Bendel Insurance.
Rivers United took the lead just before halftime with a goal from Morice Chukwu, and Joseph Onoja sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute. Nwachukwu’s goal in the 95th minute was only a consolation strike for the Benin-based team.
Rivers United’s win puts them at the top of the six-team table with eight points after four games, while Bendel Insurance is in fourth place with three points.
The loss may be a setback for Bendel Insurance, but they still have a chance to make it to the top of the table with two games remaining. On Friday, Enyimba will play Sunshine Stars, while Lobi Stars will battle Remo Stars.
