Fulham Football Club is reportedly eyeing a move for Ajax center back Calvin Bassey. The West London club has tabled an impressive £15 million bid for the Nigerian defender, according to The Athletic.
Bassey, who previously played for Rangers, had a decent debut season with Ajax, making 39 appearances. His move from Rangers to Ajax last summer for £20 million made him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history.
Although Bassey still has four years left on his contract with Ajax, it is believed that he could be available for transfer during the summer transfer window. Earlier this week, it was reported that Ajax had rejected a bid from Brighton and Hove Albion for Bassey. Ajax is reportedly seeking an offer of around £20 million to consider a sale and has not yet responded to Fulham’s offer.
Bassey, who emerged from the Leicester City youth set-up, is now 23 years old and has caught the attention of Fulham as they look to strengthen their central defensive options for the upcoming Premier League campaign. During his time at Rangers, Bassey made 65 appearances over two seasons, contributing to their success in winning the Scottish double and reaching the Europa League final.
It is worth noting that Bassey, who was born in Italy, is capable of playing at left-back as well. Reports suggest that he is keen on a return to England. With ten senior international caps already to his name, Bassey has chosen to represent Nigeria over Italy and England.
