Racing Santander Sets Sights on Kelechi Nwakali from Deportiva Ponferradina
Racing Santander is reportedly interested in acquiring the services of Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from relegated Deportiva Ponferradina. The 25-year-old has been an influential player for Ponferradina but his departure seems imminent, following the team’s relegation from La Liga 2.
According to Racinguismo, Mikel Martija, the sporting director of Racing Santander, confirmed their interest in Nwakali during an interview with Cope Cantabria. Martija acknowledged that Nwakali is on their radar, although other clubs in the same category are also interested in securing his services.
Ponferradina is one of four clubs, including Málaga, Ibiza, and Lugo, that were relegated from the Segunda Division this season. In contrast, Racing Santander finished in a relatively comfortable 12th position, ten points above the relegation zone.
With Ponferradina’s relegation, it becomes highly unlikely for a player of Nwakali’s caliber and profile to remain in the First RFEF. However, Ponferradina expects compensation for Nwakali’s departure and anticipates a significant fee. On the other hand, Racing Santander has made it clear that they will not pay transfer fees or release clauses for any player this summer.
Nwakali, who previously played for Spanish sides Huesca and Alcorcón, was a regular starter for Ponferradina during the recently-concluded campaign, featuring in 36 league games. He contributed four assists, scored one goal, and received 11 yellow cards.
Racing Santander is looking to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season and Nwakali could be a valuable addition. However, it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement with Ponferradina for the transfer of the talented midfielder.
