Virgil van Dijk is thrilled with the impact that Liverpool’s new-look forward line has made on their impressive 7-0 win over Manchester United. After the January signing of Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, both of whom scored twice on Sunday, along with Mohamed Salah who grabbed two goals of his own, the Reds have an incredibly potent attack. Van Dijk was keen to praise the two new signings for their contribution, saying: “Cody and Darwin have settled in really well and have made a big impact on the team. It’s great to see them performing so well and they are going to be very important players for us this season.”
The Dutch defender was also quick to praise the outgoing Roberto Firmino, who scored Liverpool’s fifth goal of the game. “He has been a great servant to the club and has been an integral part of our success over the last five years. It’s sad to see him leave, but we wish him all the best in his new challenge.”
Van Dijk also spoke of his delight at the team’s performance, saying: “It was an incredible performance and one that will live long in the memory. We have been very strong at home this season and it’s great to put in a performance like this against our rivals.”
Liverpool are now second in the Premier League table and look set to challenge for the title this season. With a formidable forward line and a rock-solid defence, the Reds look to be in prime shape for a strong finish to the campaign. Van Dijk is certainly confident of his side’s chances: “We are in a great position at the moment and with the squad we have I believe anything is possible. We just have to keep our focus and keep pushing forward.”
